The classic rock album rarely heard, recorded at Magazine Sound Recording in New Orleans between 1997 and 1999. Sardonic lyrics with a 1970s rock sound; allusions to David Bowie, Gene Simmons, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Paul Stanley, Devo, and others can be found throughout. Michael J. Schafer and Benjamin Mumphrey, friends since high-school, wrote and recorded Bobby Adams together, for their personal amusement. Inspired by a mutual acquaintance, lyrically the point-of-view was from that of a somewhat disoriented man.
Much to their delight, the album attracted a cult following in New Orleans, perhaps most beloved for its palatable rock sound and ludicrous lyrics. Platinum record producer Mike Napolitano (Blind Melon, Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Afghan Whigs) volunteered to not only help mix some of the songs, but also to be the guitarist in a band to play the songs from Bobby Adams live. Pat Sansone joined as well, along with drummer Greg Wieczorek. The Bobby Adams band played a handful of somewhat disgraceful shows in 1999.
Before the year had ended, Ben Mumphrey moved to Los Angeles to pursue recording engineering, eventually producing music for artists such as Frank Black and the Pixies. Pat moved to New York, started The Autumn Defense, and subsequently joined Wilco. Greg moved to New York and became an in-demand drummer, eventually hired in Norah Jones’s band. Mike Napolitano continues to produce albums, now married to musician Ani DiFranco. Bobby Adams would play one last time in 2008 on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans, adding future Afghan Whigs guitarist David Rosser on bass.
The Bobby Adams album was written and performed by Michael J. Schafer (vocals, bass, guitar, keys) and Benjamin Mumphrey (guitar, drums and percussion). Produced by Ben Mumphrey.
Officially released for the first time in 2016, available as a gatefold vinyl LP and digital download.
